2024 Chicago Marathon: Route, Schedule, Information and Street Closures

Chicago Marathon Route: The 46th Bank of America Chicago Marathon is set to take place on Sunday, October 13, bringing over 50,000 runners and more than a million spectators to the streets of Chicago. To accommodate the marathon, significant street closures and parking restrictions will be in effect. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Marathon Wheelchair Start: 7:20 AM
  • First Running Wave Start: 7:30 AM

Street Closures Overview

Numerous street closures began on September 30 and will continue through the weekend. Here’s a timeline of important closures:

Already in Effect:

  • Balbo Dr.: Closed from Columbus to DuSable Lake Shore Drive (Since Sept. 30)
  • Jackson Dr.: Closed from Columbus Dr. to DuSable Lake Shore Drive (Closed Oct. 9, 10 AM – Oct. 14, 6 AM)
  • Balbo Dr.: Closed from Michigan Ave. to Columbus Dr. (Closed Oct. 10, 4 AM – Oct. 14, 3 PM)
  • Columbus Dr.: Closed from Ida B. Wells to Roosevelt Rd. (Closed Oct. 10, 4 AM – Oct. 14, 3 PM)

  • Friday, Oct. 11:
    • Columbus Dr. from Monroe to Jackson St. (Closed 4 AM – Oct. 13, 8 PM)

  • Sunday, Oct. 13:
    • Extensive closures around the marathon route starting at 4 AM, with roads reopening by 6 PM. Key streets include:
      • Columbus Dr.: From McFetridge Dr. to Roosevelt Road
      • Michigan Ave.: From Madison to 9th St.
      • Roosevelt Rd.: From Michigan to Columbus Dr.

Abbott Chicago 5K

Additionally, the Abbott Chicago 5K will take place on Saturday, October 12, starting at 7:30 AM. Streets closed for the 5K include:

  • Ida B. Wells Dr.: Between Columbus Dr. and Michigan Ave.
  • Harrison St.: Between State St. and Franklin St.

Parking Restrictions

Parking restrictions will begin early on race day (1 AM for the Abbott 5K and at 4 AM for the marathon). If your vehicle gets towed, you can locate it by calling (312) 744-4444.

Streets Remaining Open

Some main thoroughfares will remain open during the marathon, including:

  • DuSable Lake Shore Drive
  • Inner Lake Shore Drive from Diversey Parkway to Belmont Avenue
  • Key north-south routes in and around the Loop, such as Michigan Ave. north of 11th St.

Chicago Marathon Route

The marathon starts and finishes in Grant Park, stretching 26.2 miles through 29 neighborhoods and crossing six bridges over the Chicago River.
