Happy Gilmore 2: Get ready to swing back into nostalgia. Adam Sandler is returning to the green in Happy Gilmore 2, the long-awaited sequel to his 1996 cult sports comedy. Netflix unveiled the first full trailer during its global Tudum 2025 fan event, giving fans their best look yet at the new chapter in Happy’s life — and yes, he’s still got that famous temper.
Directed by Kyle Newacheck and co-written by Sandler and longtime collaborator Tim Herlihy, the sequel catches up with Happy Gilmore nearly 30 years after his legendary rise in the world of pro golf. Now older, out of shape, and dealing with life’s curveballs, Happy is lured back into the game for one more shot at glory — and redemption.
“I haven’t swung a club in years. I’m a little intimidated,” Sandler’s character admits in the trailer. “All these guys hit it big now.” The line sets the tone for a comeback story laced with heart, laughs, and plenty of classic Sandler rage.

Who’s Returning — and Who’s New?
Christopher McDonald is back as the smarmy rival Shooter McGavin, along with Julie Bowen as love interest Virginia. Ben Stiller also returns, while newcomers include Bad Bunny, Travis Kelce, Eminem, Margaret Qualley, and pro golf legends like Jack Nicklaus, Jordan Spieth, and John Daly. Even Sandler’s daughters, Sadie and Sunny, make appearances.
Dennis Dugan, who directed the original and plays tour commissioner Doug Thompson, returns both on and off screen. Sandler and Herlihy, who penned the original film, are again leading the script, aiming to balance throwback humor with a fresh emotional arc.
“It’s Got a Lot of Heart”
While plot details remain mostly under wraps — with the cast under NDAs — McDonald described the sequel as a story about “family, friends, love, and heart,” in true Sandler style. “What I love about Adam Sandler is his heart. He’s got so much love for people,” McDonald shared at a recent premiere event.
Sandler himself acknowledged the pressure of living up to the beloved original. “It’s on your mind,” he told the Dan Patrick Show. “We’ve got a lot of good stuff, and we just want to make sure that it all comes together from start to finish.”
