Frank Ragnow Announces Retirement from NFL at 29

Frank Ragnow Retirement: Detroit Lions center Frank Ragnow, a cornerstone of one of the NFL’s most dominant offensive lines, announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 29.

The decision, shared Monday on Ragnow’s official Instagram, marks the end of a remarkable seven-year career that began with the Lions selecting him in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Frank Ragnow Official Retirement Announcement

four-time Pro Bowl and three-time second-team All-Pro honoree, Ragnow established himself as one of the league’s most consistent and physically resilient players — even as he battled through a series of significant injuries in recent years.

“I’ve tried to convince myself that I’m feeling good, but I’m not… It’s time to prioritize my health and my family’s future,” Ragnow wrote. “The Lions organization has been absolutely incredible throughout this process and I can’t emphasize enough how grateful I am… It was an absolute honor going to battle for you all.”

Ragnow played through a partially torn pectoral muscle during the 2024 season, missing just one game despite enduring a long list of physical setbacks over the past few years — including toe, groin, back, calf, ankle, and knee injuries.

Still, his performance never dipped. Ragnow was named to the Pro Bowl in 2020 and again from 2022 through 2024, helping lead the way for Detroit’s revitalized offensive success.

Drafted 20th overall out of Arkansas, Ragnow spent his entire NFL career with the Lions, becoming a fan favorite and locker room leader. His departure leaves a noticeable gap in Detroit’s offensive front, with rookie Tate Ratledge and veteran Graham Glasgow expected to compete for starting center duties during offseason workouts.

What’s Next for the Lions?

With Ragnow stepping away, the Lions may need to rework their interior line. While Kingsley Eguakun remains on the roster, his limited experience could push Detroit to explore free agency or further test Glasgow at center — a position he’s filled before.

Ragnow’s early retirement adds to a growing trend of NFL players choosing long-term health over prolonged careers. His candid statement and clear gratitude toward fans, teammates, and the organization reflect the kind of leadership that made him a key figure in the Lions’ recent success.
