Pune, October 10: The Pune Porsche accident case has taken a significant turn, with the Maharashtra government initiating action against two officials from the Juvenile Justice Board. These officials had previously granted bail to the underage driver, who was involved in a fatal car crash while driving a Porsche under the influence of alcohol. The controversial decision, which allowed the minor to write a 300-word essay as punishment, sparked public outrage across social media and the state. (Pune Porsche Accident News)
The accused, a 17-year-old from a prominent family, was initially ordered by the Juvenile Justice Board to write an essay on road safety and work with police for two weeks. However, following widespread backlash, the government intervened and suspended the two officials involved in the decision, citing abuse of power.
Details of the Incident
The accident took place in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar area, where the underage driver, allegedly intoxicated, was driving a Porsche at high speed. He crashed into a motorcycle, killing Ashwini Costa and Anish Awadhiya, who were riding the bike. Costa died on the spot, while Awadhiya was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
The juvenile was arrested soon after the incident, but the initial court ruling that allowed him to go free after writing an essay on the accident caused widespread anger. The essay required the minor to explain the necessary precautions to avoid accidents and what steps should be taken immediately after a road mishap. (Pune News)
Public Outrage and Government Action
After the bail order, public outrage intensified, leading to social media campaigns demanding stricter action. The underage driver’s essay punishment was seen as inadequate given the severity of the accident. This led to the accused being sent to a juvenile detention center, and later, the state government took swift action by dismissing the two officials responsible for the lenient ruling. The accused has since submitted his 300-word essay through his lawyer to the Juvenile Justice Board. However, the state government’s disciplinary action against the officials highlights the seriousness of the case and the demand for justice for the victims.
Legal Actions Against Others
The case has also brought charges against the minor’s father, a well-known businessman, as well as the bar owner who served alcohol to the minor and his friends on the night of the accident. Pune police have charged both under sections 75 and 77 of the Juvenile Justice Act. The father was arrested a few days after the incident, while legal proceedings against the bar owner continue.
