Pune News, 13 Oct: The investigation into the horrific gang-rape case at Bopdev Ghat has now been transferred to the Crime Branch following orders from Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar. The incident occurred on the night of October 3, when a college girl, who was out for a walk with her friend, was brutally assaulted and raped by multiple attackers.
Case Background
Initially, the Kondhwa Police Station had registered the case and launched an investigation. However, due to the severity and nature of the crime, a parallel investigation was being conducted by both Kondhwa police and the Crime Branch. The police have arrested a 25-year-old man in connection with the crime, while two of his accomplices remain at large.
The suspects, who are originally from Madhya Pradesh, had come to Pune with the intent to commit robberies. Before executing their crime, they reportedly turned off their mobile phones around 10 PM on the night of the attack. After consuming alcohol in the Bopdev Ghat area, they spotted the young couple sitting in an isolated location. Seeing no one around, they assaulted both the girl and her male companion. Under the threat of a machete, the accused committed the heinous act of gang rape.
Escape and Police Investigation
After committing the crime, the suspects fled from the scene. They remained in the area for about 30 minutes before making their escape on motorcycles. They avoided main roads, using hidden pathways, and eventually reached Shindewadi on the Satara Road. (Bopdev Ghat Case)
Investigations revealed that the suspects were familiar with the region, as they had committed previous robberies in the area. They also had knowledge of the locations of CCTV cameras, allowing them to avoid detection. However, footage from a petrol pump in the Amrai Vasti area of Saswad helped police identify one of the suspects. This clue, along with technical evidence and information from informants, led to the capture of the 25-year-old.
The police are now working intensively to track down the remaining two suspects, who are still on the run. Over 60 police teams have been deployed to apprehend them.
Transfer to Crime Branch
Given the seriousness of the crime, Commissioner Amitesh Kumar decided to hand over the investigation to the Pune Crime Branch. The transfer is expected to expedite the arrest of the other culprits and ensure a thorough investigation. (Pune Bopdev Ghat Case)
