Maharashtra Congress Seat Sharing Tensions Continue as Assembly Elections Loom

Mumbai: As the Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2024 approach, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) is facing internal strife, particularly between the Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT), over seat-sharing arrangements. Amid rising tensions, Congress high-command has reached out to Uddhav Thackeray to resolve disputes ahead of the November 20 election.

Congress Maharashtra in-charge Ramesh Chennithala recently met Thackeray at his residence, Matoshree, to address lingering issues. While the Congress has already settled seat-sharing discussions with the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP), disagreements between Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) persist, particularly in the Vidarbha region.

Seat Sharing Disputes Intensify

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut has openly criticized the Maharashtra Congress for delays in decision-making, accusing the party of relying on its central leadership in Delhi for approvals. Raut highlighted that while negotiations over 200 seats have been finalized, a few key constituencies, particularly in Vidarbha and Mumbai, remain under contention. “The Congress needs to expedite its decisions. Time is running out, and the MVA must be united,” said Raut.

Raut’s remarks have fueled further tensions, with Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole hitting back, asserting that Congress leaders have already ceded certain seats but will consult the high command for final decisions on approximately 28 contested constituencies. He dismissed Raut’s accusations, downplaying the significance of the dispute.

Thackeray Cautions Against a Breaking Point

Uddhav Thackeray, while optimistic about the MVA’s chances of winning the elections, cautioned that internal disagreements should not reach a “breaking point.” He expressed confidence that a seat-sharing deal could be reached within days but emphasized the importance of unity to defeat the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance, which is also finalizing its own seat-sharing formula.

With both alliances engaged in tough negotiations, the stakes are high for the upcoming elections. As the MVA struggles to finalize its seat-sharing arrangements, the internal discord could impact its ability to mount a strong challenge to the ruling BJP alliance in Maharashtra.

The Maharashtra Assembly Elections, scheduled for November 20, are expected to be a closely fought contest, with both the MVA and Mahayuti aiming to secure power in the state. For the MVA, resolving seat-sharing disputes within Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) is crucial for presenting a united front ahead of the polls.
