Paul Di’Anno: The music world is mourning the loss of Paul Di’Anno, the former lead vocalist of legendary heavy metal band Iron Maiden, who has passed away at the age of 66. Conquest Music confirmed his death on behalf of his family, stating that Paul Andrews, professionally known as Paul Di’Anno, died at his home in Salisbury, England.

Born on May 17, 1958, in Chingford, East London, Di’Anno rose to fame as Iron Maiden’s frontman from 1978 to 1981. He was the voice behind the band’s self-titled debut album, Iron Maiden (1980), and its influential follow-up, Killers (1981). These albums played a pivotal role in shaping the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and solidified Di’Anno’s place in music history. His raw, aggressive vocals added a punk-inspired edge to Maiden’s early sound, helping to launch the band to prominence.

After parting ways with Iron Maiden due to personal struggles and musical differences, Di’Anno continued his career with bands such as Battlezone and Killers, and also pursued a successful solo career. Despite battling significant health challenges in recent years, which left him confined to a wheelchair, he continued performing for his devoted fans, completing over 100 shows since 2023.

In September 2024, Di’Anno released his first career retrospective album, The Book of the Beast, which highlighted his extensive body of work post-Iron Maiden. His most recent project, PAUL DI’ANNO’S WARHORSE, was formed in 2022, and the band released their debut album in July 2024. Di’Anno had been undergoing extensive medical treatment for knee surgery complications and lymphedema in Croatia, where he also reconnected with Bruce Dickinson, the singer who replaced him in Iron Maiden.

Di’Anno’s legacy in heavy metal is indisputable, with fans and critics alike praising his unique vocal style and contributions to Iron Maiden’s early success. Despite their differences, Di’Anno and Dickinson shared mutual respect, and in recent years, they put to rest any rumors of animosity.

Paul Di’Anno’s death marks the end of an era, but his influence on the heavy metal genre will live on. His voice, both gritty and powerful, helped define Iron Maiden’s early sound and left an indelible mark on the world of rock music.

Fans worldwide are raising a glass in his honor, celebrating the life of a true metal pioneer.
