Jerry West: The Los Angeles Clippers honored the iconic Jerry West in an emotional tribute during their season opener against the Phoenix Suns. Midway through the first quarter, the team paid tribute to the NBA Hall of Famer who passed away in June at the age of 86. Then, at their brand-new home, Intuit Dome, they held a number of enduring memorials.
A key figure in the Clippers’ resurgence, West served as a consultant and executive board member from 2017 until his death. Known for his unmatched basketball IQ, the legendary “Logo” helped guide the Clippers to unprecedented success, including their first Western Conference finals appearance in 2021.
To further commemorate his legacy, the Clippers have placed a permanent “JW” decal near midcourt and a memorial seat behind the basket where West frequently sat. The seat will remain in place throughout the 2024-25 season, complete with his signature and an emblem of “The Logo.”
Steve Ballmer, Clippers’ owner, shared his deep admiration for West, stating, “Jerry was a lifelong learner and teacher who inspired all of us. His love for the game and dedication to the Clippers will never be forgotten.”
In addition to the Clippers’ tribute, the Lakers, West’s former team where he spent his entire 14-year playing career and earned 14 consecutive All-Star appearances, also honored him during their own opener with a video tribute and replica jerseys. The Lakers will don a special uniform patch featuring his No. 44 throughout the season.
West was posthumously inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame for a third time this month, recognizing his immense contributions as a front-office executive for the Clippers, Lakers, Memphis Grizzlies, and Golden State Warriors. This rare honor solidifies his place as one of the most influential figures in NBA history.
The Clippers’ tribute ensures that West’s legacy will continue to inspire both fans and future players alike.
