Sacha Baron Cohen: In a significant philanthropic gesture, acclaimed actor and comedian Sacha Baron Cohen has pledged $500,000 to aid children and families in Sudan, where a catastrophic hunger crisis is escalating. This donation will support the vital efforts of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and Save the Children USA, who are working on the ground to provide essential services amidst a backdrop of devastating conflict and severe food insecurity.

Cohen’s contribution comes at a crucial time, as 25.6 million people in Sudan are currently experiencing hunger, with 11 million displaced due to ongoing violence between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. The escalating conflict has severely disrupted humanitarian aid, leaving families to go days without food. Cohen expressed his concerns over the crisis receiving “alarmingly little attention” and called on the public to contribute to the humanitarian response.

“This contribution is a small step toward addressing the immense needs in Sudan,” Cohen stated. “I’m pleased to support the IRC and Save the Children, who are delivering essential nutrition, water, sanitation, and health services to those most in need, both within Sudan and in neighboring countries.”

The IRC’s President and CEO, David Miliband, highlighted the urgent need for support, noting that the conflict has created the world’s largest displacement crisis. He emphasized that only half of the required aid has been received, underscoring the dire situation faced by many.

Similarly, Janti Soeripto, President and CEO of Save the Children, praised Cohen’s commitment to raising awareness and support for the crisis. “222,000 severely malnourished children are likely to die in the coming months if their needs remain unmet,” she warned, stressing the importance of timely assistance.

This is not Cohen’s first foray into philanthropy; he has previously supported children and families affected by crises in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Somalia. His notable contributions have included sending PPE to frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic and advocating against racism and hate speech.

Cohen’s recent donation showcases his ongoing commitment to humanitarian causes and shines a spotlight on the urgent needs of Sudan’s most vulnerable populations. As the situation continues to deteriorate, contributions like Cohen’s are vital for providing immediate relief and support.

For those interested in helping, donations can be made directly to the IRC and Save the Children to aid their ongoing efforts in Sudan.
