Salem Fire: Brush fires that ignited over the weekend in Salem and other parts of northeastern Massachusetts continue to burn, sending smoke as far south as Boston. With over 100 acres charred, the fires pose challenges for firefighters and threaten to disrupt the influx of tourists visiting for Halloween festivities.
The National Weather Service reported that the smoke’s distinct odor could be detected miles away, prompting inquiries from residents across southern New England. A surface inversion has trapped the smoke close to the ground, but meteorologists expect conditions to improve later today, allowing the smoke to disperse.
Difficult Conditions for Firefighters
Salem Fire Chief Alan Dionne stated that the terrain surrounding the affected areas, including Peabody and Lynn, complicates firefighting efforts. The rocky and secluded landscape makes it difficult for crews to access the flames directly. Local and state agencies are deploying helicopters and drones to help identify hotspots and coordinate water drops.
“It’s a challenging situation,” Dionne explained. “This fire is going to smolder for a long time, and fresh air and wind can cause flare-ups.” Fortunately, no injuries or damage to homes or businesses have been reported thus far.

In addition to the Salem fires, multiple brush fires have erupted statewide, including a significant fire in Middleton, approximately ten miles northwest of Salem. Crews are focusing on containing these blazes, especially near residential areas and critical infrastructure like power lines.
Residents are on edge as dry conditions persist, raising the risk of new wildfires. The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency has warned of elevated fire dangers, emphasizing the need for vigilance amid ongoing dry weather. In Beverly and Canton, other brush fires have caused similar concerns, with thick smoke impacting visibility and air quality.
