Mahesh Tilekar: In a heartwarming act of social responsibility, renowned Marathi director Mahesh Tilekar has stepped in to help a disabled woman named Sunita find a new, permanent home. After losing both her arms in an accident, Sunita’s husband abandoned her. Despite her physical challenges, Sunita raised her children on her own and survived in a makeshift tin shed. Mahesh Tilekar played a pivotal role in her journey to securing a 1BHK apartment, fulfilling a dream she thought impossible.
Mahesh recently shared her inspiring story on his social media, recounting the journey: “During the promotion of my film Hawa Hawai, actress Varsha Usgaonkar and I visited Pune, where we met Sunita, a determined woman overcoming her disability to provide for her family. While working at a construction site, she lost both her arms while trying to save a fellow worker from an electric shock. Her husband soon abandoned her, leaving her with two children to care for.” (Pune News)
Tilekar continued, “Sunita initially contemplated suicide, but she found strength thinking of her unborn child and her daughter. She began a new life, learning to manage all her household chores despite her disability. She even expressed a wish for a small, permanent home. With this in mind, we sought government support to help her.”
Tilekar also shared the bureaucratic hurdles Sunita faced while gathering the paperwork required for a government-sponsored home. A local leader initially promised help but later ignored her calls, making her run in circles. Undeterred, Tilekar made personal efforts to contact relevant officials, who eventually granted her the home. However, a financial contribution was still required, and when Sunita felt defeated, Tilekar arranged for the funds. (Pune Latest News)
Tilekar shared his satisfaction upon seeing Sunita receive the keys to her new home, especially as she called the leader who had previously ignored her. He concludes, “During Diwali, people light lamps to brighten their homes, but I felt immense gratitude knowing I could help bring lasting light into this family’s life by providing a permanent home. It was indeed the grace of God.”
Today, thanks to Tilekar’s unwavering support, Sunita and her children have a new beginning, moving from a temporary tin shed into a well-deserved 1BHK home. (Pune News Today)
