Walt Disney World: Walt Disney World is undergoing significant transformations as it prepares for the closure of beloved attractions in favor of new and immersive experiences. Fans of the parks have been buzzing with excitement and concern after recent announcements regarding the fate of iconic areas such as DinoLand U.S.A. at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
During the D23 Disney Experiences Showcase, Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro delighted audiences with plans for a new Villains land and other attractions, only for the mood to shift as details emerged about the closure of existing favorites. Most notably, DinoLand U.S.A., a cherished part of Animal Kingdom since its opening in 1998, will begin shutting down on January 13, 2025. Key attractions like TriceraTop Spin and Chester & Hester’s Dinosaur Treasures will close, followed by DINOSAUR and other venues later in the year.
This closure is part of a larger initiative to replace DinoLand with a vibrant new land themed around Tropical Americas, officially referred to as Project Ro. The transformation will introduce an Encanto-inspired attraction and a unique Indiana Jones adventure, taking guests on an archaeological journey through a Maya temple. The new land promises lush landscapes and culturally rich experiences reminiscent of Central and South America.
Disney has already filed a key permit with the South Florida Water Management District detailing demolition plans for the first phase of the project. This includes the removal of Chester & Hester’s Dino-Rama and associated attractions. While the excitement for the upcoming Tropical Americas land is palpable, many fans are expressing sadness over the departure of DinoLand, which holds nostalgic value for visitors of all ages.
The changes extend beyond DinoLand. The iconic “It’s Tough to be a Bug!” show will also close in early 2025 to make way for a new Zootopia-themed experience, further marking the evolution of Animal Kingdom. While many fans are eager for new attractions, there is a mix of emotions as they bid farewell to the familiar experiences that have been a staple of the park.
Additionally, Disney plans to close Tom Sawyer Island and Rivers of America at Disney World, with work beginning early next year for new Cars-themed rides. While the Disneyland version of Tom Sawyer Island will remain open, the announcement has sparked numerous petitions from fans urging Disney to preserve these cherished attractions in Florida.
As Disney continues to evolve its theme parks, the emphasis on creating fresh experiences while maintaining a connection to the past remains a core principle. D’Amaro has reassured fans that the goal is to ensure that any changes lead to offerings that exceed what currently exists, honoring the legacy of Walt Disney himself.
With the first closures set to begin soon, Disney World enthusiasts are encouraged to visit and enjoy these beloved attractions one last time. As the parks prepare for new magic, they also promise to preserve the stories and memories that have enchanted millions of visitors over the years.
