Zaccharie Risacher: Atlanta Hawks’ No. 1 draft pick Zaccharie Risacher has found the transition to the NBA more challenging than anticipated. Despite his standout athleticism in Europe, the young forward acknowledges a reality check in his first games with the Hawks, telling HoopsHype: “In France, I was very athletic, but here I’m just one more.”

Risacher, formerly a star in the French league with JL Bourg, was Atlanta’s major draft investment. Known for his combination of length, athleticism, and versatile guard skills, he intrigued scouts globally. However, early in the 2024-25 NBA season, the high expectations set for him have met the reality of intense competition and physical demands in the league. “Back in France, I felt dominant. But here, everyone is so much bigger, stronger, and quicker. It’s humbling,” Risacher shared in a separate interview with The Athletic’s John Hollinger.

In his initial games, Risacher has averaged just 7.2 points per game on 30.3% shooting from the field and a mere 21.4% from three-point range, far below his Summer League numbers where he had also struggled, scoring 14.5 points per game on 39.3% shooting. His preseason stats showed promise, with an average of 16 points and 5.5 rebounds on 60% shooting in limited appearances. Nevertheless, these glimpses of potential have yet to fully translate into regular-season performance, making the adjustment phase for the young player clear.

Still, the Hawks’ management remains confident in his long-term potential. “He’s a hard worker and willing to learn, traits that are invaluable in a top pick,” an Atlanta Hawks spokesperson commented. “We know it’s just the beginning for Zaccharie, and he’s already shown flashes of the player he can become. We’re here to support him as he adjusts to the speed and physicality of the NBA.”

For now, Risacher’s defensive abilities stand out more than his scoring. His length and timing make him a reliable defender, and the Hawks have utilized him in various roles, taking advantage of his versatile skill set. “He may look like a role player now, but we see him as someone who, with time, could evolve into a featured player,” added a Hawks coach.

While Zaccharie Risacher’s path to NBA success is still unfolding, his honesty about the challenges of the transition could inspire other international players eyeing the NBA. As he works to refine his game, the Hawks’ No. 1 pick remains a hopeful bet for Atlanta, where fans and analysts alike are eagerly watching his progress.
