Burberry Share Price: Burberry Shares Surge Amid Moncler Takeover Rumors

By
On:

Burberry Stock Price: Shares of British luxury fashion retailer Burberry soared on Monday, experiencing a significant jump fueled by speculation that Moncler, the Italian outerwear brand known for its iconic puffer jackets, is considering a takeover bid. The news sent Burberry’s stock price up as much as 8% in early trading, although it later stabilized to around 3.5% higher, trading at approximately 876.6 pence.

This spike in share value comes after reports surfaced on Miss Tweed, indicating that Bernard Arnault, head of LVMH, is eager to facilitate a deal with Burberry. LVMH had previously acquired a 10% stake in Double R, an investment vehicle linked to Moncler CEO Remo Ruffini, thereby securing a seat on Moncler’s board. Analysts believe that Burberry’s current market valuation, which stands at nearly £3 billion (approximately $3.89 billion), positions it as a viable takeover target, particularly given its struggles this year.

Once a staple of the FTSE 100, Burberry has faced challenges, including a 40% drop in share price throughout 2024, weak demand for luxury goods, and leadership changes that have unsettled investors. Sasha Kachanova, an investment manager at Abrdn, highlighted Burberry’s potential, emphasizing its unique position as an independent British luxury brand with rich heritage and opportunities for growth in product lines.

The luxury market overall has struggled, particularly with diminished demand from Chinese consumers. However, a recent stimulus package announced by the Chinese government may provide a boost to luxury brands, potentially benefitting Burberry in the long run.

While Burberry and Moncler have both declined to comment on these rumors, the market remains buzzing with anticipation. Investors are closely watching how these developments unfold, as Burberry looks to stabilize its position and revive demand in a challenging luxury retail landscape.

As the situation progresses, investors and industry watchers will be keen to see whether a formal bid materializes, and how Burberry’s share price responds in the weeks to come.
