AMZN Stock: Amazon is making a landmark $10 billion investment to build a new data center and artificial intelligence (AI) campus in North Carolina, aiming to boost its cloud infrastructure and support the growing demand for generative AI technologies.
The new facility, to be developed in Richmond County, is expected to create at least 500 high-skilled jobs in engineering, cybersecurity, and data operations. Thousands more jobs are likely to be supported indirectly through construction, infrastructure upgrades, and the Amazon Web Services (AWS) supply chain.
North Carolina Governor Josh Stein called the move “one of the largest investments in state history,” saying it would solidify the state’s role as a leader in AI innovation. “Artificial intelligence is changing the way we work and innovate,” he said. “This investment keeps North Carolina at the forefront of what’s next.”
Amazon’s new campus will include high-performance servers, cloud computing infrastructure, and the latest AWS AI tools such as SageMaker, Bedrock, and Amazon Q. The project will also provide training programs in partnership with local colleges and universities to prepare workers for careers in AI and cloud computing.
The investment arrives as Amazon ramps up capital spending to stay ahead in the global AI race. In 2025 alone, the company expects to invest nearly $100 billion in AWS infrastructure, with a significant portion dedicated to AI development. CEO Andy Jassy recently described AI as “the biggest technology shift since the internet,” signaling the company’s long-term commitment to the space.
Richmond County officials approved a package of economic incentives to support the project. These include tax rebates tied to job creation and investment milestones, as well as infrastructure upgrades like enhanced water systems and broadband expansion—all without additional cost to local taxpayers.
“This project will truly transform our community in ways we cannot imagine,” said Richmond County Manager Bryan Land.
Amazon’s announcement comes as rivals like Microsoft and Alphabet (Google’s parent company) also pour tens of billions into expanding their AI and data center capabilities, making the cloud and AI sector one of the most fiercely competitive in tech today.
With this bold move, Amazon is not just expanding its cloud footprint—it’s planting the seeds for the future of AI innovation in America’s Southeast.
