Buffalo Public Schools are under growing legal and public pressure following serious allegations of abuse and a separate attempted kidnapping case.
Attorney Files Abuse Complaint Against District
Attorney Kayla Ferrel Onder, who leads the Sexual Abuse Department at OnderLaw, LLC, is preparing to file a legal complaint against Buffalo Public Schools. She currently represents 12 clients who allege they were victims of sexual abuse, failed reporting, and harmful discipline within the district.
Onder stated that some victims were younger than high school age when the alleged incidents occurred. She emphasized that her clients want accountability and justice for the emotional and psychological harm they endured.
More Victims May Come Forward
Onder expects additional victims to join the case. She invites others with similar experiences to contact her at [email protected]. A formal complaint with more detailed allegations is expected to be filed within 30 days.
Detective’s Podcast Sparks Public Outcry
Former Buffalo police detective Richard Hy previously accused school officials of covering up abuse and obstructing investigations. His comments, made on the Unsubscribe Podcast, may have inspired some victims to come forward, according to Onder.
Hy had earlier spoken publicly with 7 News about why he went public with his allegations against the district.
School Board Delays Hiring Independent Investigator
The Buffalo Board of Education held special meetings in April and May in response to the allegations. While they initially announced an independent investigation, the board delayed hiring a firm and decided to expand their search.
A final decision on the investigator is expected during the next board meeting on Wednesday.
Attempted Kidnapping at Buffalo Science Magnet School
In a separate case, an Illinois man is accused of attempting to kidnap a student at Buffalo Science Magnet School in February. Officials say the school followed protocol, but the incident raised concerns about campus safety.
Lawmakers have since commented, saying the school’s actions were appropriate, though the investigation continues.
Public Demands Accountability
Buffalo residents and parents are demanding transparency, safety improvements, and accountability from the school district. With legal filings and investigations underway, many await answers and action.
