Iowa Hawkeyes Basketball: The Iowa Hawkeyes kicked off their 2024-25 women’s basketball season in impressive fashion, securing a 91-73 victory over Northern Illinois. The win was highlighted by transfer senior Lucy Olsen’s standout performance, leading all scorers with 19 points and contributing seven assists in a dominant display at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Iowa’s win was propelled by a 14-0 run early in the second quarter, giving them a decisive lead that Northern Illinois could never recover from. Despite a few injury concerns, including the absence of senior guard Sydney Affolter and a rolled ankle for All-Big Ten forward Hannah Stuelke, the Hawkeyes’ depth and talent were on full display.
Lucy Olsen: A Debut to Remember
Lucy Olsen’s debut as a Hawkeye was one for the record books. The 6’1” guard, who transferred from Villanova, set an Iowa record for transfers in their first game, leading her new team with 19 points. Olsen showcased her versatility with mid-range jumpers, fast breaks, and even an important three-pointer that sparked Iowa’s offensive surge. While her three-point shooting needs some refinement, Olsen’s performance has Iowa fans excited about what’s to come this season.
“Running out onto the court, feeling the energy from the fans, it was surreal,” said Olsen. “I’m excited to be here and can’t wait for what’s ahead.” Her 35 minutes on the floor and selfless playmaking were key to Iowa’s victory, and head coach Jan Jensen praised Olsen’s leadership, especially given her short time with the team.
Kylie Feuerbach and Freshmen Shine
Senior guard Kylie Feuerbach was another major contributor, filling the stat sheet with 14 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and six steals. Feuerbach’s performance highlighted her versatility, proving to be a crucial defensive and offensive force for the Hawkeyes.
“I just focus on playing hard and staying consistent,” said Feuerbach, who also recorded a career-high four three-pointers in the win. “When I get a chance, I just take it.”
Freshmen Teagan Mallegni and Taylor Stremlow also made a big impact. Mallegni, a 6’1” guard, dropped 14 points in her debut, while Stremlow added three rebounds, five assists, and three blocks. Both young players displayed their high basketball IQ and chemistry with teammates, providing Iowa with an exciting glimpse of the future.
Next Challenge: Virginia Tech
With their season opener in the books, Iowa now turns its attention to a tough matchup with Virginia Tech on Sunday, November 10. The Hokies, coming off a dominant 99-57 victory over UNC-Wilmington, will provide a stern test for the Hawkeyes as they continue to gel with their new roster. The game will tip off at 4:30 PM CT on ESPN2, and Iowa will need to rely on their depth and versatile play to maintain their winning ways.
As the season progresses, the Iowa Hawkeyes, with the leadership of Olsen, Feuerbach, and an exciting group of freshmen, are poised to make a strong push for a high seed in the NCAA tournament.
