MS Dhoni IPL 2025: The iconic former Indian captain and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) stalwart, MS Dhoni, is set to return for his 18th season in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, a move that has thrilled fans worldwide. On October 31, CSK confirmed Dhoni’s retention, making him the oldest uncapped player in the tournament under a reintroduced IPL rule. With fans eagerly awaiting “Thala’s” comeback to the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, CSK’s decision to retain Dhoni cements his legacy and adds a spark to the upcoming season. Dhoni’s continued presence is possible due to the IPL governing council’s revival of the “uncapped player” rule, originally scrapped in 2021. According to the new provision, a capped player becomes uncapped if they haven’t played international cricket in the last five years and don’t hold a BCCI Central Contract. Dhoni fits the criteria, allowing CSK to retain him for a reduced price of INR 4 crore, a significant advantage for the team as they manage their auction purse.

The IPL released an official statement on this uncapped player rule, stating, “A capped Indian player will become uncapped if the player has, in the last five calendar years preceding the relevant season, not played in the starting XI in International Cricket or does not have a Central Contract with BCCI.” This rule only applies to Indian players, a distinction that benefits CSK as they build their roster around their long-standing captain.

Dhoni’s journey with CSK has been nothing short of legendary, with the “yellow army” rallying behind him since the IPL’s inception. He has led CSK to a remarkable five IPL titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023, making him one of the league’s most successful captains. Dhoni’s return promises another electrifying season as fans celebrate his enduring legacy.

Alongside Dhoni, CSK has retained key players, including Ruturaj Gaikwad (INR 18 crore), Matheesha Pathirana (INR 13 crore), Shivam Dube (INR 12 crore), and Ravindra Jadeja (INR 18 crore). With INR 55 crore remaining from their total auction purse of INR 120 crore, CSK is poised to strategically build a robust squad around their revered captain.

As Dhoni gears up for IPL 2025, fans are ready to witness more magical moments from ‘Thala’ in what promises to be another iconic season. CSK’s decision to retain their legendary captain reinforces Dhoni’s timeless appeal and dedication to the team, adding excitement to the upcoming IPL season.
