How the Suspects Tried to Evade Arrest
The accused, all from Madhya Pradesh but residing in Pune for several years, had been involved in petty thefts and other minor offenses. However, their crimes took a dark turn with the brutal gang rape incident at Bopdev Ghat. Following the crime, the suspects went to extreme lengths to cover their tracks, traveling an astonishing 81 kilometers instead of the direct 20 kilometers to avoid being caught on camera.
The Events Leading Up to the Crime
On the night of the incident, the suspects purchased beer from a shop in Yevalewadi, near the base of Bopdev Ghat, around 8:30 PM. After consuming the alcohol, they ventured further up the ghat around 10:30 PM, where they spotted the victim and her friend. The suspects intimidated the couple, stealing their valuables and subjecting the young woman to a brutal assault. (Bopdev Ghat Incident)
Following the assault, the suspects ascended to the top of the ghat and then took an alternate route to descend, carefully avoiding any major roads or CCTV-monitored areas. From there, they traveled to Khed Shivapur via various back roads and toll booths, ensuring they remained undetected.
Police Investigation: AI Technology and CCTV Played Key Role
In a bid to avoid detection, the suspects abstained from using their mobile phones, complicating the police’s efforts. However, the Pune Police employed advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, to sift through over 700 CCTV footage locations. (Pune Crime News)
A breakthrough in the case came when a witness provided a description of the three men riding on a two-wheeler, which helped the police generate sketches. Using AI and further analysis of CCTV footage, the police were able to link the suspects’ movements, ultimately leading to their capture.
Arrest and Reward for the Police
One of the accused was apprehended in a rural area near Pune, which led to further interrogation and the unraveling of the entire crime. The police are continuing to question the two other accomplices involved in the incident.
In recognition of their diligent work, Pune’s Crime Branch and the Kondhwa Police will be awarded a sum of Rs 10 lakh for solving the case.
