Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has received an overwhelming response for its scholarship program aimed at meritorious students from Class 10 and Class 12. As of now, over 13,000 applications have been submitted, with around 9,500 applications from Class 10 students and 3,500 from Class 12 students, according to officials from the PMC. (Pune News)
The scholarship is provided under two prominent schemes: the Bharat Ratna Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Educational Aid Scheme and the Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe Educational Aid Scheme. The scholarship offers ₹15,000 for Class 10 students and ₹25,000 for Class 12 students. The purpose of this initiative is to financially support students in continuing their education.
Students residing within the municipal limits are eligible to apply for the scholarship for the upcoming academic year. However, there could be delays in disbursing the scholarship amount if the election code of conduct comes into effect, as explained by PMC officials. If this occurs, the funds will be released only after the election-related restrictions are lifted.
Over the years, thousands of students have benefited from this scheme, which receives strong participation from various schools in Pune, especially municipal schools. The PMC has been actively promoting the scheme in schools across the city to ensure maximum student participation.
This year, the eligibility criteria require open-category students to secure at least 80% marks in the academic year 2024 to apply. For municipal school students, night school attendees, and students from backward classes, the minimum required percentage is 70%. Additionally, students with disabilities (minimum 40%) and children of unorganized laborers, waste pickers, or those working in biogas projects must have secured at least 65% marks. If the number of applications exceeds the allocated budget for the scheme, the PMC will distribute the available funds equally among eligible students for the academic year. This initiative continues to support deserving students, ensuring they have the financial backing to pursue further education.
