Pune, 10 October: In a move to tackle the growing criminal activities in the city, Pune Police have decided to install searchlights and sirens on all major hills around Pune. This decision comes after a series of alarming incidents, including a recent gang-rape case that has shaken the city.

Pune, once known as a cultural hub, has witnessed significant changes over the past few years due to rapid industrial growth and an influx of people from across the country. With the increasing population, criminal activities have also seen a sharp rise, leading to concerns about the safety of residents.

Rising Crime Prompts New Security Measures

The Pune Police’s decision to install searchlights on hills comes in the wake of an incident on October 3, when a 21-year-old woman was sexually assaulted by three men at Bopdev Ghat. The incident has sent shockwaves through the city, and despite police efforts, the accused remain at large. In response, Pune Police have ramped up security measures, with the installation of searchlights being one of the key steps to prevent crimes in remote areas like hills and ghats. (Pune News Today)

These searchlights will be accompanied by sirens that can be used during emergencies. This initiative is aimed at making public spaces safer and discouraging criminal activity in isolated areas.

Recent Crimes on Pune’s Hills

The decision to install searchlights is not without precedent. Just days before the Bopdev Ghat incident, a young man was robbed by a group of thieves on Baner Hill. The increasing frequency of such incidents has raised serious concerns among residents, prompting law enforcement to take stricter action.

Criminals often target deserted locations, making hills and remote areas prime spots for such activities. The police’s initiative to light up these locations is intended to prevent them from becoming hotspots for criminal behavior. (Pune Latest News)

CCTV Cameras and Enhanced Security

In addition to the searchlights, Pune Police have also been instructed to improve surveillance in vulnerable areas. Maharashtra Legislative Council Deputy Chairperson Dr. Neelam Gorhe has called for the installation of CCTV cameras, increased patrolling, and the upgrading of police posts in isolated spots.

Dr. Gorhe emphasized the need for regular use of sirens to alert citizens and deter criminals. The aim is to enhance public safety and curb the rising crime rates in Pune.

Investigation into the Bopdev Ghat Case

As part of the ongoing investigation into the Bopdev Ghat gang-rape case, Pune Police have questioned over 100 suspects. The city’s detective branch is working around the clock to track down the perpetrators. Police are thoroughly checking all criminal records and reviewing CCTV footage from up to 50 kilometers around the crime scene to gather evidence.

Pune Police’s swift response to these crimes underscores the urgency of the situation and their commitment to making the city safer for its residents. The installation of searchlights and sirens is expected to play a significant role in reducing crime and ensuring the safety of Pune’s citizens.
