TAMPA, Fla. — Joseph Malinowski, famously known as “Lieutenant Dan,” gained viral attention during Hurricane Milton for his daring decision to ride out the storm on his unregistered sailboat. However, on Friday, he was arrested by Tampa police on multiple charges, including failure to appear in court and misdemeanor trespassing at Bayshore Linear Park.
The 54-year-old Malinowski, whose viral escapades earned him recognition on TikTok, was found in the park despite receiving warnings from officers about creating a public health hazard due to lacking an accessible marine sanitation device on his vessel. Officers initially contacted Malinowski on Thursday, instructing him to leave the area. However, he remained at the dock and was arrested the following morning.
Malinowski’s notoriety skyrocketed after he attempted to weather Hurricane Milton in his boat, garnering both support and concern from the public and authorities. After a previous rescue from the storm’s path, where Tampa Mayor Jane Castor commended the police for ensuring his safety, this latest incident highlights the ongoing challenges he faces.
Now in custody at Orient Road Jail, Malinowski’s unregistered boat has been impounded. While he remains incarcerated, questions surrounding his future and public perception linger. As a self-identified “TikTok star,” Malinowski has a complex history that includes prior legal issues, including an arrest for assaulting a police officer.
